What happens when a classic pizza and a cinnamon roll have a culinary baby? Pizza rolls, that’s what! Imagine this: all the fantastic flavors of your favorite pizza snuggled up inside a cozy blanket of soft, homemade dough, rolled up and sliced into bite-sized rounds of pure joy. It’s like a pizza party in every bite! Perfect for sharing (or not), these tasty little rolls take the best parts of pizza – the gooey cheese, the zesty sauce, the savory fillings – and wrap them up in a fun, hand-held package that’s as great for game night nibbles as it is for a quick snack or lunch. So, get your apron on, and let’s start rolling!

Dough-ing It Right: Picking the Perfect Pizza Roll Base

While the recipe includes instructions for a homemade dough, store-bought pizza dough can be a convenient alternative. Both options deliver delicious results, and the choice comes down to your preference for convenience versus the satisfaction of making dough from scratch.

Say Cheese! Exploring Your Delicious Options

The world of cheese is vast and varied, and exploring it can add a delightful twist to these pizza rolls. While our recipe calls for the classic combination of mozzarella and parmesan, feel free to get creative.

  • For a sharper flavor, you might consider a good cheddar or even a bit of crumbled blue cheese.
  • If you’re a fan of creaminess, consider dollops of ricotta in your filling.
  • Provolone or fontina could lend a nice, melty consistency.
  • For those who love a good, smoky note, a smoked gouda could be just the ticket.
  • If you’re dairy-free, you can substitute the mozzarella and parmesan cheese with plant-based alternatives that melt well.

Remember, whichever cheese you choose should complement your other fillings and, most importantly, it should melt well to achieve that irresistible, gooey texture we love in a pizza roll.

Roll With It: Fun and Flavorful Filling Ideas

When it comes to fillings, the possibilities are truly endless. In addition to Italian cold cuts, you could try cooked chicken, sausage, or even a vegetarian option like grilled vegetables. If you’re using vegetables with a high water content, such as mushrooms or zucchini, it’s a good idea to sauté them first to remove excess moisture. This little step ensures your pizza rolls stay perfectly crispy and not soggy. Just remember, while it’s tempting to stuff these rolls with all your favorite ingredients, be careful not to overfill them. Too much filling can make the rolls difficult to handle and might cause some spillage during the baking process.

Serving Suggestions

Pizza rolls can be served as an appetizer, snack, or even a main dish. They pair well with a variety of dips like marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or pesto. A side salad or a bowl of soup could also complement them nicely for a full meal.

Total Time 2 hours 10 minutes

Ingredients

For the Dough (optional if using store-bought dough):

  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Filling:

  • 1/3 cup pizza sauce
  • 1/2 pound sliced Italian cold cuts or pepperoni
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasonings

For the Topping:

  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, whisk together the water, sugar, and yeast. Add the flour and salt. With the dough hook, mix on medium speed until the dough comes together.
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour.
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured piece of parchment paper and roll it into a large rectangle.
  • Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce on the dough, leaving about a 1″ border around the edges. Top with sliced cold cuts or pepperoni, then sprinkle with mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, and Italian seasoning.
  • Roll up the dough in the style of a cinnamon roll. Using a serrated knife, slice the roll into 1-inch pieces and transfer the parchment paper with the slices to a baking sheet. Cover and let the rolls rise for 30 to 45 minutes.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the melted butter, garlic powder, and dried parsley. Brush this mixture onto the tops of the rolls.
  • Bake the rolls for approximately 14 minutes, or until they’re lightly browned on top.
  • Serve hot, with additional pizza sauce on the side if desired.
