A Staple Seasoning Blend

Cajun seasoning is a pantry staple in Louisiana, and in my kitchen too! It’s easy to make at home.

  • Spicy & versatile! Cajun spice adds a smoky, spicy, and savory pop of flavor to recipes.
  • DIY Delight! Why buy it when you can make it? This simple recipe can be made anytime on the spot!
  • Deep south flavor! Add this delicious, flavorful seasoning to grilled shrimp, chicken, fish, or even a shrimp boil. The rich spicy flavor is also great on veggies.

Spices for Cajun Seasoning

Savory – Onion and garlic powder, oregano, thyme, and a dash of homemade seasoning salt and pepper are all you need.

Spicy – Paprika and cayenne give this seasoning blend some kick! Make it extra spicy by adding a pinch (or two or three!) of red pepper flakes, if desired. Smoked paprika adds a deep, earthy, flavor over sweet or regular paprika!

Variations – To change it up, some brown sugar will make Cajun seasoning a little bit sweet and help the other seasonings cling to the food as it melts. For a sugar-free option, try Swerve or another brand or brown sugar alternative.

Keeping it Fresh

Cajun spice can be stored for up to 6 months. If you keep it longer it will still be great but the flavor may mellow over time.

To keep it tasting its best, store the Cajun seasoning in an air tight container. If you have one, add a small desiccant packet to prevent moisture and clumping.

I prefer a finer table salt in this recipe as I find coarse salt or kosher salt doesn’t blend as evenly.
