Chef Gino Calleja, previously known for his popular establishment Reyna’s Taqueria, has always been passionate about creating new culinary adventures for patrons. Inspired by the creative culinary endeavors of his mother, Doña Reyna, Chef Calleja has long dreamed of introducing a unique, elevated Mexican concept to Sarasota, a city where he has deep roots and an unwavering commitment.
Reflecting on his hometown, San Lucas Colucán, Chef Calleja revealed, “Every time I visit home, I have to make the stop at San Lucas Colucán. The sound of ‘Kolucan’ has always resonated with me, reminding me of my family and my roots, which will forever be an integral part of who I am.”
Partnering with Chef Jose Rojas, who brings a wealth of experience from his journey in the culinary world, including his time at Louies Modern, Rojas is excited to share his vision and expertise with the Sarasota community. “Establishing Kolucan is about finding my identity as a chef,” Chef Rojas explained. “Gino and I share a strong love for our native Mexican roots, and I admire his experience and success in the restaurant business. Together, we are proud to introduce modern-day authentic Mexican cuisine to Sarasota.”
Kolucan Mexican Bar & Grill sets itself apart with its elevated approach to traditional Mexican dishes. Patrons can expect a robust beverage menu featuring house-made juices and mixers, a dynamic tequila and mezcal list, and a diverse wine portfolio featuring a series of Mexican wines. The restaurant will also offer live entertainment and host special events to create a vibrant and lively atmosphere.
One of the highlights of the restaurant is the Frida Lounge, a nod to the late Frida Kahlo, adorned with custom pieces and mural work created by local artist Lipstick Lex. Guests can immerse themselves in the captivating vibe created in this space while savoring a special menu full of exquisite flavors that varies slightly from that of the main restaurant.
Starting Thursday, August 31, at 5:00 pm, Kolucan will open for dinner service, with plans to expand to lunch and brunch in the near future. The restaurant will also feature a happy hour from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday, allowing patrons to indulge in delectable bites and handcrafted cocktails at a special price.
